Futons: An Alternative To Traditional Furniture Types
Western style futons are based on a Japanese futons which are thick mattresses used as beds. The mattresses are designed to be flexible so they can be slept on at night and then folded up and put in a closet or otherwise stored away during the day. The western version is made to be a permanent piece of furniture. Their mattresses are usually thicker and are sold with a frame. This way they may be put into several different rooms and can be used as a bed or a couch. Or both.
The frames for these western futons are very basic, usually metal or wood. With one pull on the frame, the futon opens up from a couch to a bed. They slide easily back into a couch so you can quickly transform places to sit into places to sleep.
In the 1990's, the U. S. Saw huge popularity of futons. Today they still are frequent purchases because of their versatility. They make a good alternative to sleeper sofas because they do not require much room to open up into a bed. In smaller living rooms, it is not uncommon to see a folded-out sleeper sofa take up the entire room with little space in which to walk. A closed futon doesn't take up much less space than an opened one.
Using a futon as a regular bed is also not a bad option. Great for smaller bedrooms, they take up less space and can be decorated to be just as nice looking as a complete bedroom set. There are covers for futons that come in a variety of colors and prints. Taking them off and putting them back on can be a chore, but this really doesn't need to be done too frequently since when sleeping, you will likely be using regular bed sheets.
So they are great for bedrooms and living rooms. A futon is also good for most any other room. They are a nice fit for an upstairs loft and are good for dens or offices. Here they become regular couches that can be easily used as a bed for visiting company.
A futon is a great pull-out type of bed but can also be slept on while closed. When you open a futon, it becomes basically a full sized bed. Closed, it is comparable to a twin bed. So, for ease, it can be used as a more comfortable alternative to 'sleeping on the couch.'
There are 3 basic styles of futon frames. First is the bi-fold. When assembled, this looks just like a park bench including armrests. Second is the tri-fold. This also resembles a park bench but also has an additional panel behind the back of the bench. This panel flattens out when opened. The tri-fold has 2 models: with armrests or without.
Futons are less expensive than whole bed sets and living room couches. Most department stores and furniture stores will have them in stock or you can buy online. Frames are easy to put together and once assembled they are not difficult to move. A futon mattress is fairly heavy and because it is so flexible, it is flimsy which makes it hard to carry.
